Help for Parents of Struggling Readers

Dear Friends,

I wanted to let you know that I will be speaking in Minnesota about dyslexia to home school groups at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Ham Lake, WINGS (Grace Church in Eden Prairie), YEAH Academy (Roseville), and the Plymouth/Wayzata Home School Group. I have received many e-mails and phone calls this year from people looking for information related to this topic - so I thought it might be a good idea to offer some workshops related to dyslexia and struggling readers.

The presentation will cover the following topics:

1. How to identify a problem (signs to watch for)
2. Recommended books on the topic
3. Recommended resources for the elementary years, middle school, and high school years
4. Testing services – when to consider testing, where to turn and costs
5. Tutoring – where to turn
6. Other things to consider – the benefits of music and the importance of extracurricular activities
7. Accommodations – when, where, and why – and how to obtain them (for standardized testing, for outside classes, for traditional schooling, for ACT and SAT tests)
8. Technology – helpful tools for struggling readers and writers
9. Support for parents, educators, and students

The YEAH presentation will take place on October 10, 2016 and again on February 6, 2017.

I will be presenting at WEST Home school co-op on January 23, 2017 and the

Plymouth-Wayzata Home School Group (PWHG) will take place on March 9, 2017.

The presentations will include information for parents along with a handout containing recommended websites, curriculum materials, tutors, training, and more. In addition, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and to review materials, books, and resources. If you are interested in attending the presentation, please contact the Philomena Press at info@philomenapress.com for registration details.

Likewise, if you would like me to speak to your homeschool group about this topic, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you and God bless you!

Sincerely,

Pamela Patnode
