Home Schooling children with special needs can offer many blessings! Indeed, depending on the child and the situation, home schooling can provide the best form of education in the environment that is most suited for the child. According to John Tuma of the Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators (MACHE), “Providing an education for the special needs child will have its challenges regardless of the educational approach taken. Home schooling provides a wonderful educational opportunity for special needs children and their families, and I would go as far as to say that it is the best educational option for the special needs child.”

If you have a child with extraordinary needs and are considering home education for that child, please read the article mentioned below. It is also recommended that you contact the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) and talk with an expert in this field. Every child is unique, as is the family from which they come. Speaking directly with an expert in the field will help you find answers to questions, additional information, recommended resources based upon the needs of your child, and local support found in your city or state.

The web address for HSLDA is: www.hslda.org.

In addition to providing guidance and direction for educating your child with special needs, the Home School Legal Defense Association will also give you the necessary advice related to required documentation for your school district. Some school officials may try to challenge your right as parents to educate your special needs child at home. HSLDA can offer support and legal guidance specific to your state and school district.

An excellent article related to home schooling children with special needs is titled:“Growing at Home: Nourishing Your Special Needs

Another national organization devoted to helping families who home educate children with special needs is the National Challenged Homeschoolers Associated Network (NATHHAN). Their web address is: www.NATHHAN.com.
